2Fragile--not good for a toy  Feb 25, 2009 By B. Hill
Our son loves Mater so I bought two of these after reading the reviews. Within two days both had lost a wheel and the teeth detached from one of them. The side mirrors and hook are flimsy plastic and will probably break soon too. They had been knocked off a coffee table, or dropped accidentally, but every other kid toy seems to be built with this eventuality in mind and holds up. I would not recommend this toy for a child that is in any way rough on toys. I only hope the super glue holds them together long enough for him to move on to something else.

2Hot Wheels, they're not!  Mar 02, 2007 By Dan Finney
Good as collectables, not so good as actual toys that you play with.

My daugter has broken the hook off of Mater (bought her a new one), broken the wheel off of Dynaco McQueen, and broken the front axle off of the tractor. Mater's tow equipment is made with a softer cheaper plastic than the rest of the toy, and I expect the new one to break any day now.

Without being too sexist, I want to point out that my 4 year old daughter is probably more gentle on them than the average boy playing with them. They have never entered a sandbox. They have not been stood on, nor thrown, nor been monster-trucked by a bicycle.

While I will still probably buy more, as my daughter loves the Cars movie and wants to own them all, (including Frank, which they do not make) I would say to all: buyer beware!

1shame on Mattel  Jun 22, 2011 By sicnarf
Before you purchase Cars or any other Mattel product, please consider Mattel relies on Indonesia's rain-forests for it's packaging and is putting endangered Orang-utans and Tigers at risk. Indonesia's last remaining Orangutans and Tiger rely on this habitat and will surely vanquish for the earth forever if this process does not stop; all for the sake a toy packaging, rediculous. Please protest Mattel and choose a more environmentally sustainable toy for your children until Mattel agrees to discontinue this horrible, needless practice.

4Mater is Cool, but Poorly Designed  Mar 05, 2011 By Jill St Jacques
Mater is pretty darned cool. Like the other reviewers on this site have mentioned, however, the product does have a few drawbacks. The plastic tow rigging on the back of Mater is completely non-functional, which is OK by me, but the downside here is the plastic tow rigging IS ALSO QUITE FLIMSY. This is a big problem, because, obviously, whether or not the toy maker INTENDED their rigging to be functional, youngsters are going to attempt to MAKE IT FUNCTION anyway, and are cruelly disappointed when Mater's tow rigging subsequently tears, breaks, and becomes a tangled mass of plastic garbage on the back of their beloved tow truck. Disney makes a lot of schlock, and their films are often racist and sexist beyond belief, but that doesn't mean I don't buy their toys, just the same. That said, Disney could pay a little better attention to how their toys are made. It is bad enough that Disney doesn't manufacture their toys in America any more, but in farming the toy business out to overseas sweatshops, they shouldn't relinquish all attention to detail. Those interested in learning more about the production of Disney toys overseas will be gratified to read the article "Disney Toys Made In Sweatshops," which ran in The Sunday Times on December 23, 2007, by correspondents Claire Newell and Simon Parry. Very informative!

5Great for Cars Fanatics!!  Feb 25, 2007 By Amy Stephens
My 2 year old boy just loved the movie Cars, and he also loves Hot Wheels, and when I saw these I knew he had to have them!!
They're not actually hot wheels, but about the same size.
He adores them, and plays with them every day. I would love to get him all of the cars in the set.
He is also very rough with his toys, and they are in great shape.
